Are female costumes supposed to be empowering or distracting?

Have you seen the latest female superhero costume?

Marvel's first female-led superhero movie is officially a record-breaking success!

Now that the world is ready for female super hero movies, the question is, what do female heroes wear? Thoughout the movie, the super suits worn by Brie Larson in Captain Marvel are noticeably different from what we've seen female heroes wear in the past. In fact, they look a little bit like something Chris Evans might wear as that other Avengers captain: form-fitting yet thick, with military-inspired armor around the arms, hips, chest, and abs.

It's no secret that ALL superhero costumes have evolved over the years (just look at some earlier men's super hero costumes) but women have always seemed to be in much skimpier and honestly impractical outfits. Until now. Captain Marvel's costume isn't skimpy, it isn't impractical, it's exactly what a superhero would wear.

What do you think? Whose costume is most empowering?

Ready for battle - Brie Larson looks determined to kick some butt in her costume.

Unlike previous costumes we've seen, hers has a high neck without an obvious breast-plate... almost corporate approved.

Olivia Munn's Psylocke costume was quite revealing. Said Munn about the costume, "To me, I know that Psylocke is dressed very sexually. Out of all the costumes, it’s really revealing, but it’s important to know that she always had substantive plotlines… Just because she’s dressed like that, she’s not this promiscuous, slutty girl that’s—in fact, Apocalypse is the one who dressed her and gave her that outfit.”

My how things change! Male super heroes have also seen their fair share of costume upgrades. Just look at the original Batman costume compared to the one from The Dark Night. Even Batman has a breast-plate now!

While the Superman costume has stayed mostly the same, it's definitely gotten tighter! Which do you like more?

The newer Wonder Woman costume was also designed to look more like armor. The costume designers drew from Greek battle armor inspiration to make sure Diana looked ready for battle.

It's hard not to notice the similarity between Captain America's costume and Captain Marvel's - they both look ready for battle in practical and functional outfits!

Of the many iterations of Catwoman, Halle Berry's costume is the most... revealing. There's no way fighting Batman was easy with all-leather pants and a completely exposed stomach.

Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn got some backlash for her skimpier costume. In an interview with The New York Times, she defended her character's look, saying that Harley is "wearing hot pants because they're sparkly and fun," not for the enjoyment of the men around her.
